The Art & Observation of Birds
Latest Work
A male Scarlet Tanager rests on a lichen-covered branch, his vivid red plumage set against deep black wings and softly toned paper. Fine pencil strokes reveal the layered feathers within those bold colors, while muted greens and grays trace the textured bark beneath his feet.
I have yet to meet a Scarlet Tanager in the wild, though I’ve learned his call and listen for it when I’m in suitable woodland. Drawing him offered time to study a bird I’m still hoping to encounter—the curve of his pale bill, the folds of his wing, and the sweep of red down his back. Until that first sighting, I have this quiet introduction.

A Black-and-white Warbler was the first warbler I recognized in my backyard, after his movements made me look twice at what I had mistaken for a nuthatch. In this portrait, the raised bill and firmly planted feet hold my attention—a small singer putting his whole body into the moment.

Your Black-and-white Warbler comes with a brief Field Note about my first backyard encounter, his sure-footed movements, and the decidedly unmusical sound of his song.

An Indigo Bunting rests on a curved branch, his blue feathers set against a soft, warm background. Fine pencil strokes follow the contours of his plumage, from the bright blue of his crown and breast to the darker feathers of his folded wing. His feet grip the weathered wood; a small gleam catches in his eye.
I chose translucent drafting film for this portrait because its luminous qualities seemed especially suited to his feathers. Layered over toned fine art paper, it gives the blue a gentle presence. The small format invites a closer look at a bird whose color might first catch your attention from across a room.
