Perched among evergreen needles, a male Blackburnian Warbler turns his head, revealing a brilliant orange throat framed by bold black markings. White wing patches and a softly feathered belly balance the bright color, while green needles spread beneath his feet. The quiet tone of the paper leaves room to appreciate each detail.
The orange throat of the first Blackburnian I encountered stopped me in my tracks. For this portrait, I layered my brightest orange and yellow pencils to approach that memorable color. Against the greens of his perch, it offers a glimpse of what made that first meeting so striking.
